Pisco Punch has the distinct pleasure of being the first classic cocktail offered on Merchant of Beverage's site that originated in our hometown of San Francisco. It was created in the late nineteenth century at the Bank Exchange, the bar renowned far and wide for knocking many a traveler sideways after a cocktail or five. One savvy bartender found a use for the pisco (Peruvian brandy) that South American gold-seekers were bringing in by mixing it with pineapple gum and lemon juice, and the rest is barroom history. Our favorite pisco for this punch is the aromatic BarSol Selecto Italia for its superb quality, balance and finesse.
Merchants of Beverage has included a bottle of the Caribbean liqueur Falernum to accompany the pisco and the pineapple gum; they find it gives the punch a hint of sweetness and spice. This is a favorite to please a crowd – batch it ahead of time and impress at your next holiday party.
